Press Club of Dallas Extends Katie Awards Deadline One Week
All Entries Due by 5 p.m. Friday, August 29, 2008
DALLAS, TX…The Press Club of Dallas today announced a one-week extension of the deadline for Katie Awards entries, with all entries now due by 5 p.m. Friday, August 29. Entries must be delivered to Press Club Katie Awards, Attention Michael Patterson at Edelman, 3131 Turtle Creek Blvd. #500, Dallas TX, 75219, to be eligible for the 2008 awards. Finalists in all categories will be announced by October 6, 2008.
Press Club board member Tony Pederson, Professor and Belo Distinguished Chair in Journalism, Southern Methodist University, says the entries will be judged by the faculties of the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, FL and the University of Missouri, and several former editors of national publications.
Pederson said, “Immediate Press Club Past President Hugh Aynesworth, Press Club Foundation Past President Rand LaVonn, and I have worked hard to line up an extraordinary group of judges for the various categories for the Katie Awards. We have made personal contact with the judges, and we believe we have everything in place to restore the integrity of the process.”
“The Press Club of Dallas has a long and distinguished history of rewarding top journalism in the United States and, in doing so, providing scholarships to help educate the journalists of the future,” Pederson said.
Press Club of Dallas Foundation President Cheryl Hall and board member Gloria Campos are co-chairing the 2008 Katie Awards. The awards banquet will be held at the Sixth Floor Museum Saturday, November 15, 2008. Keynote speaker will be author and award-winning journalist Hugh Aynesworth.
Hall said, “This will be the 50th Katie Awards competition and the first since it was cancelled in 2007, when judging improprieties were discovered. The Press Club of Dallas Foundation, which oversees scholarships generated by the Katies, has worked arduously with the Press Club to restore integrity to the competition.”
Campos said, “The scholarships are very important to me because they helped me through school, and it’s important to all of us to continue to help young people pursue their dreams through education.”
“As board members of the Foundation, we have taken this endeavor on as a personal crusade. We staunchly believe in both missions of the Katies: to help college students pay for degrees in media-related fields and to honor the bet work by those already in the media. We intend to restore the Katie Awards contest to its past glory. The key to success will be transparency and judges of the highest qualifications,” Hall added.
