An Evening with Evan Smith

On March 23, 2010, the Press Club of Dallas hosted Evan Smith: Founder of the Texas Tribune, for a moderated discussion on his new venture, the Texas Tribune and its relevancy today .

Press Club of Dallas hosts Evan SmithEvan Smith spent nearly 18 years at Texas Monthly as the magazine’s president and editor in chief. On his watch, Texas Monthly was nominated for sixteen National Magazine Awards, the magazine industry’s equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize, and was twice awarded the National Magazine Award for General Excellence. He had this to say about his new venture, ” What we intend to accomplish with the Trib- and what we mean to do on an on-going basis- is right there in our stated mission: to promote civic engagement and discourse on public policy, politics, government and other matters of statewide concern.”

Krys Boyd: host of KERA’s THINK program moderated the discussion. She started the lively and thought provoking discussion by asking Evan, “Is the Trib and your work a new form of journalism?” Evan answered,” No, it’s a form of new journalism. We are one of many looking for new solutions. We’re a content company and a media company…in these times of incredible rest and uncertainty how do you reach people? It’s not painting over the old wall paper but scraping it off to bare walls”.

Join Krys and Evan for an enlightening conversation…
