The Katie Awards

The Katies are back! On Saturday, Nov. 15, Texas journalists will gather for the landmark 50th anniversary of the Press Club of Dallas for a gala function at the Sixth Floor Museum. Keynote speaker Hugh Aynesworth will lead a program that commemorates the 45th anniversary of the Kennedy assassination with several special guests.

And of course, the Katie Awards will be presented to the best local journalists.

Tickets are only $25, and the event begins at 6:30 p.m. Cocktail attire recommended.

Toast to Tomas de la Mata

On Sept. 26, the Press Club of Dallas will honor the Fairmont Hotel’s retiring catering manager, Tomas de la Mata, with a luncheon toast in the famed hotel’s Venetian Room. Tomas is well-regarded for his commitment to the club by overseeing more than a dozen Gridiron Shows, Katie Awards and other events. Tickets are $60/person, with tables of 10 available at sponsorship levels of $600 and $1,000. The Press Club’s new board member, Tracy Rowlett, will serve as master of ceremonies. For more information, call Camille Keith at 214-351-3444 or Liz Oliphant at 972-931-0164.

Candidates’ Night!

On July 15 at 7 p.m., the candidates for the open positions on the Press Club board will be available to present their ideas for while they should be elected or re-elected to the board. The meeting will be at the Gingerman, 2718 Boll St. in Uptown. (Cash bar.)

For those of you who haven’t participated in a candidate’s night in the past, here are a few guidelines. Please feel free to bring printed material touting your candidacy and you’ll have an opportunity to tell everyone how wonderful you are - sometimes accompanied by cat calls or boos. Bribery is also perfectly acceptable and, generally, welcomed.  This could take the form of buying a round of drinks, distributing chocolate kisses (or other varieties) or handing out ad specialties from your station or paper, etc.  It’s just a fun way to get better acquainted with folks.
