2012 Living Legends of North Texas Journalism Announced

The 2012 Living Legends of North Texas Journalism have been announced.

The honorees are:

Carolyn Barta - Political writer and editor at The Dallas Morning News.

Clarence Bruyere - Radio and television engineer at WFAA.

Bob Compton - Metropolitan, Focus, and Book editor at The Dallas Morning News.

Bill Evans - Executive managing editor at The Dallas Morning News.

Karen Hughes - News reporter for KXAS-TV, Director of Communications in the Texas Governor’s office, and Counselor to the President of the United States.

Joe Laird - Photographer at The Dallas Morning News.

Frank Luksa - Sports writer for The Fort Worth Star-Telegram, The Dallas Times Herald, and The Dallas Morning News.

Burl Osborne - Executive editor and publisher of The Dallas Morning News.

Rena Pederson - Vice president and editorial page editor at The Dallas Morning News.

Tracy Rowlett - News anchor at WFAA and KTVT.

Bob St. John - Feature columnist and sports writer for The Dallas Morning News.

There will be a public reception on Tuesday, May 22, 6pm to 8 pm, to honor the new Legends. The event, which recognizes the region’s most distinguished journalism professionals for their work and contribution as industry trailblazers, will be held at the Visiting Nurse Association’s Patrick and Beatrice Haggerty Center, 1440 West Mockingbird Lane in Dallas. The candidate’s night, where members can meet and listen to the nominee’s speeches, will be held in July.

Ballots will be mailed to members in mid-July.

The 2012-13 Board of Directors will be announced at the annual meeting on August 3rd.

Hugh Aynesworth’s Presentation at North Lake College

The presentation was made possible thanks to a collaboration between the News-Register/Journalism Club and the Press Club of Dallas.

Ten Living Legends will be honored
this year. We would like your
recommendations for this year’s honorees.
Below are selection criteria to be considered for nomination as a Living
Legend.

1. The nominee will have worked in the Dallas/Fort Worth market for at least 10 years.

2. The nominee is no longer active in the news media.

3. The nominee’s name, media outlet, and experience would be immediately recognizable
to his/her contemporaries who feel the nominee is a likely candidate for the
Legends award.

4. The nominee continues to live in Texas.

The Living Legends honorees for 2011

A committee comprised of past Living
Legends honorees and long-time Press Club of Dallas members will choose 10 to
be honored this year from among all the names submitted.

The 2012 Living Legend award winners will
be notified by the Press Club of Dallas president and requested to be present
for the event.

JKF’s assassination changed Hugh Aynesworth’s life. He’ll share his experiences with NLC students April 11

Career journalist and author Hugh Aynesworth, a reporter for The Dallas Morning News when John F. Kennedy was assassinated, is scheduled to speak to students on April 11, from 11 a.m. until noon in the Student Life Center. This presentation is possible, thanks to a collaboration between the News-Register/Journalism Club and the Press Club of Dallas.

Aynesworth, a four-time Pulitzer Prize finalist, was the only reporter to witness the president’s assassination and the arrest and shooting of Lee Harvey Oswald. He was also the first reporter on the scene at J.D. Tippit’s murder, the Dallas police officer who was gunned down after being the first individual to stop Oswald after Kennedy’s assassination.

An advocate of the “lone assassin theory,” Aynesworth broke more stories about the assassination and its aftermath than any other reporter at that time. He reported on the trial of Jack Ruby and was the first to interview Oswald’s widow, Marina.

He is a former writer for The Washington Times, a bureau chief for Newsweek and an investigative team leader for ABC’s 20/20. He covered the Martin Luther King, Jr. assassination, the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing by Timothy McVeigh, and the Branch Dividian tragedy in Waco in 1993.

Since 1983, Aynesworth and writer Stephen G. Michaud (colleagues at Newsweek) have teamed up to write six books, including The Only Living Witness, the definitive study of serial killer Ted Bundy. The book was named one of the “ten best true-crime books ever written” by the New York Daily News.

Aynesworth and Michaud’s most recent collaboration is titled JFK: Breaking The News.

As a seemingly definitive expert on the JFK assassination, Aynesworth will share stories of and answer questions about that day in 1963, and journalism in general, when he visits North Lake College next month.
