Press Club Foundation


The Foundation Board is the 501(c)3 group responsible for scholarships, finances and providing counsel to Press Club members. The Foundation Board is currently made up of 10 members, nearly all former-presidents of the Press Club.

The Foundation works with more than 75 colleges and universities to provide scholarships to journalism/communications students with Texas ties. The Foundation has awarded more than $325,000 in scholarships over the years.

Since 1986 the Foundation has saved more than $180,000 for the Press Club, which otherwise would have been paid in taxes. Foundation Board members also provide insight because of their long tenure with the club. Most important, the Foundation Board members stand ready to help whenever you need us.

Foundation members are:

  1. Gloria Campos - WFAA, Ch. 8 award winning news anchor

    • Foundation member since 2001. Personally funded scholarships named for Marty Haige, Michael Spears and others.
    • Awarded the 2001 Buck Marryat award. Press Club member since about 1988.

  2. Cheryl Hall - Dallas Morning News award winning business columnist

    • Foundation vice president since 2006. Foundation president 2002-04. Foundation member since 1996.
    • Press Club president in 1995-96. Involved in numerous committees and Press Club member since 1994.

  3. Jimmie Lovell - Entrepreneur and former-newspaperman for the Dallas Times Herald and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram

    • Foundation president 2002-03. Foundation member since 1993.
    • Press Club board member various times during 1960s, 70s and 80s. Chairman or involved in Headliner of the Year, Gridiron, Nominating, Auction and Roast committees. Press Club member since 1960.

  4. Rand LaVonn - Atmos Energy communications manager,

    • Foundation president since 2006. Foundation member since 2001.
    • Press Club president 2000-01. Katie Awards with CBS’ Scott Pelley; Roast of Mayor Ron Kirk; Press Club board member 1996-2000; recipient of two Katie Awards; involved in several committees and Press Club member since 1992.

  5. Denise Lyman - Paramount Communications president,

    • Foundation member since 1999.
    • Press Club president 1998-99. Press Club board member 1994-99. Produced 1998 Roast of Tom Hicks (one of most successful in Club history); Executive Producer, 1996 Gridiron: Headliner Gov. George W. Bush; 1997 Gridiron: Headliner Mayor Ron Kirk; 1998 Gridiron: Headliner Ray Nasher. Press Club member since 1991.

  6. David Russell - Verizon vice president, external affairs

    • Foundation secretary since 2006. Foundation member since 2004.
    • Press Club president 2003-04. Treasurer from 1998-2002; Press Club board member from 1996 to 2005; Chairman of the Katie Awards in 1996; Co-chaired Press Club Roast in 2000; Participant in Gridiron shows since 1992 and winner of three Lucifer Awards; member of Press Club since 1992, and winner of four Katie Awards.

  7. Jay Rosser - Head of communications at BP Capital (Boone Pickens),

    • Foundation treasurer since 2006. Foundation president 1995-96. Foundation member since 2004.
    • Press Club president 1994-95. Chaired several committees; Producer of the Roast of Boone Pickens (one of the most successful in Club history) and a member of the Club since 1990.

  8. Linda Rutherford - Southwest Airlines vice president, public relations and community affairs.

    • Foundation president 2005-06. Foundation member since 2001.
    • Former-Katie Awards chairman, former-chair of professional development and Press Club member since 1991.

  9. Phil Schoch - Former-assistant vice president for communications at UT Southwestern Medical Center, Phil is now the executive editor and manager of The Highland Lakes Newspaper Group, based in Marble Falls in the Hill Country.

    • Foundation president 1993-1994. Foundation treasurer from 1998-2006. Foundation member since 1993. Responsible for fiscal strength of the Foundation.
    • Press Club president 1991-92. Chaired Gridiron and Membership committees; involved in numerous activities, member of Club since 1989.

  10. Bert Shipp - Retired legend at Ch. 8 news. Covered the JFK assassination and interviewed The Beatles.

    • Foundation scholarship chairman since 2006. Foundation president 199?. Member of Foundation Board since 19??.
    • Press Club president 1972-73, chaired numerous committees and a member of the Club since 1956.

Foundation members are also involved in other boards and public service organizations, which adds to their experience and insight.
